Frequently Asked Questions

General (Fees, Medications, Tests, etc.)

Medical fees feel very expensive.

For patients eligible for government funding, registered GP visits are subsidized. As Noriko Noda Medical & Coaching is a fully private clinic without government subsidies, our fees may seem higher in comparison. However, even at subsidized clinics, adults typically pay NZ$50+ for a 15-minute consultation in most areas.

Can I continue using the exact same medications as in my country?”

We can prescribe medications available in New Zealand. When unavailable, we’ll:
1) Explain comparable NZ alternatives
2) Respect your choice to either use local substitutes or import from your country (requires a customs letter written by a NZ medical practitioner)

Note: Mental health medications (especially benzodiazepines) have strict limits – bring a referral letter from your own doctor if using these. Some medications (e.g., ADHD stimulants as of August 2025) require psychiatris’s approval.

Can I get prescriptions without consultations like in my country?

Initial consultations are mandatory. For well-controlled chronic conditions, follow-up prescriptions may be issued without visits (prescription fees apply).

Do I need a referral letter from my Japanese doctor?

Required for mental health or rare conditions (Letters in English or Japanese acceptable).

Are blood tests and medications free?

Generally self-funded. Residents (permanent/2+ year work visa holders) receive subsidized prescriptions (currently NZ$5-15/item at public clinics – prescription from private clinics, like this clinic may be charged more at a chemist).

Others pay full cost.

ACC Injuries

We cannot process ACC claims – visit urgent care clinics or physiotherapists directly. While we provide advice on ACC-covered conditions, all services remain self-funded.

Bringing Medications to NZ

Permitted amounts:

Controlled substances (e.g., morphine, ADHD meds): 1-month supply

Regular medications: 3-month supply

Blood Tests

Available through regional providers (Labtests, Southern Community Laboratories, etc.).

We’ll explain the process during consultations if needed.

Can I use services while traveling

Yes, but requires NZ address registration (can be temporary accommodation).

Can we consult you about our child who will be studying in New Zealand in the future?

Yes, consultations are possible. However, please note that any medical consultations conducted before a New Zealand residential address is confirmed will not be covered by our clinic’s New Zealand medical malpractice insurance.

For this reason, we require you to sign a document in advance stating that you will not hold Noriko Noda Medical & Coaching liable for any medical consultations conducted prior to the establishment of a New Zealand residential address. Please rest assured that we will never provide irresponsible advice.

Once your New Zealand residential address has been determined, please inform us immediately. We will be happy to provide follow-up care during your stay in New Zealand according to the client’s preferences.

Travel insurance paperwork?”

We’ll complete insurer-provided forms (additional fees may apply for lengthy documentation).

I’m looking for a regular GP in New Zealand. Can I register your clinic as my primary healthcare provider?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. However, if you understand and accept the following conditions:

  • All consultations, tests, and medications will incur fees
  • We cannot provide referrals to public hospitals
  • We cannot respond to emergency cases

We would be pleased to provide support services for residents in New Zealand.
